The house is the ideal place for holidays with family or friends, and is a good base for the Le Mans motor-racing events. The area is not heavily visited by tourists – it is ‘real’ France – meaning you can find excellent restaurants at good prices, and have a very tranquil time. There is a good variety of things to do within striking distance if you tire of eating, drinking, swimming and relaxing around the property. Weather-wise you can expect long, warm summers, very pleasant springs and autumns, and cold, crisp winters. Click here for the weather in Sarthe.

  • Le Mans – major city, very nice old town and cathedral (30 mins – best to park at the Université tram terminus on the main road into LM from Saint-Denis-d’Orques (the RD357) – park and ride into town is cheaper than driving all the way and parking in town, and quicker):
  • Laval – pleasant provincial town in Mayenne, attractive old quarter, rent a boat on the river Mayenne for half or full day (40 mins)
  • Tepacap – tree-top walks / squirrel-slides etc (terrifying!) (45 mins, on outskirts of Le Mans)
  • Le Lude – classic chateau on the Loir (1 hour)
  • The Loir valley – for our nearest vineyards (1 hour)

  • The Loire valley (the main one not, not the Le Loir without an ‘e’) – vineyards etc (1 hour to Angers)
  • Grand Parc Puy du Fou – fantastic day out for the family (1.5 hours + queuing to get in) – allow a full day – this is a must for a family holiday, and book before you go, especially if you want to do the evening show.
  • Mont St Michel – for the nearest beach (2 hours)
  • Zoo Parc de Beauval – superb zoo (2 hours)
  • Paris (55 mins on the TGV from Le Mans – book tickets in advance to get a bargain day return)

  • DVD player, and a selection of films
  • Wireless internet connection – connection details are on the noticeboard in the kitchen (subject to reasonable use, please)

The swimming pool

The pool is 11.5 metres long, by 5.5 metres wide with ‘Roman steps’ at one end. It is 1.2 metres deep apart from a deeper point (at the opposite end from the steps) that is 1.8m. It is covered with a retractable ‘abri’ which also heats the water. You can swim under cover or in the open air. There is a large surrounding terrace with sun-loungers.
